Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention
The 1975 BTWC establishes a global ban on BW. Under its terms, countries undertake not to develop, produce, stockpile or acquire biological agents or toxins "of types and in quantities that have no justification for prophylactic, protective and other peaceful purposes," as well as weapons and means of delivery. One hundred forty-five countries, including the United States, have joined the treaty. The full-text of the convention is provided here with its supporting documents.
Chemical Weapons Convention
The CWC bans the development, production, acquisition, stockpiling, retention and direct or indirect transfer of CW. It also prohibits the use or preparation for use of CW and the assistance, encouragement or inducement of anyone else to engage in activities prohibited by the CWC. The CWC entered into force on April 29, 1997, following ratification by 65 signatories. As of November 12, 2001, 145 countries have either ratified or acceded to the CWC. Another 34 are signatories. The full-text of the convention is provided here with its supporting documents. The text of the CWC can be searched by keyword on this site.
